Serving and beyond to better lives

After being established in Hong Kong in 1985 as a not-for-profit organisation to give aid to Vietnamese refugees, Christian Action has since grown to provide social and humanitarian programmes to migrant workers, ethnic minorities and asylum seekers in Hong Kong. All the efforts led in 2003 for Hong Kong’s first service centre as a vital link to fill the gap in humanitarian services in Hong Kong. Subsequently, in 2019, the relocation to a new six-story head office building in Kowloon.

The new head office building houses the administrative, training rooms, classrooms and care support of the organisation. A key challenge in the relocation is how to facilitate ease in finding specific destinations and services programmes in the building. The outcome for the organisation was to use temporary signs in varying materials and placements in every floor. This resulted in a more disorderly navigation for the users of the multi-floor head office.

Navigating to reach mission and purpose

Through an in-depth walk through of the multi-level structure, Springtime established an understanding of the wayfinding requirements of each floor. With the information we gathered, we defined the strategy most optimum for user navigation in the building.

We designed a signage system that is clear and sensible. We developed a graphic language that is friendly and easy to understand. The signs are placed in strategic locations based on the unique requirements of each floor. And to assist users find their destinations, we assigned each floor with a unique colour to create a visual cue that they have arrived.

In order to maintain the character of the building, we designed the signage using materials that integrate with the architectural environment. This also allowed the signs communicate messaging to users more effectively and with ease.

The result is an intuitive wayfinding and pedestrian circulation in the head office building of Christian Action. Aptly, an alignment of the organisation’s core values in empowering the humanitarian connection of Christian Action in providing refugees direction to have improved lives and become valued members of society.
